The male version of pelvic vein reflux

In men, the testicular vein runs from the scrotum up to the kidney area, just as the ovarian vein does in women. If its valves fail, blood pools in the network of veins around the testicle, called the pampiniform plexus. The result is a varicocele, often described as feeling like a “bag of worms”. Varicoceles are common, especially on the left side. Many cause no problems, but some cause a dragging ache or affect fertility.

What this section covers

Varicocele symptoms, how it is diagnosed, treatment options including surgery and embolisation, the link with fertility, and the rarer cases of pelvic venous congestion in men. A new lump in the scrotum should always be checked by a doctor.
